Quick Answer: Your 3 Days in Lijiang
Three-second verdict: Lijiang is the one place in China where an 800-year-old cobbled town, a 5,596 m snow mountain, and a living minority culture (Naxi) all sit within one day's reach. Three days (2 nights) covers every headliner without rushing.
| Day | Theme | Highlights | Ticket (per person) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Old Town & First Impressions | Lijiang Old Town (Dayan), Black Dragon Pool, Mu Palace, lantern-lit night walk | ¥40 (Mu Palace); Old Town & Black Dragon Pool free |
| Day 2 | Jade Dragon Snow Mountain | Glacier Cable Car to 4,506 m, boardwalk to 4,680 m, Blue Moon Valley | ~¥260 (entry ¥100 + shuttle ¥20 + cable car ¥140) |
| Day 3 | Shuhe & Baisha | Quieter old towns, Tea Horse Road history, Baisha murals, snow-mountain views | Free (optional: Naxi Ancient Music ¥76+) |
In one sentence: Wander the maze of the Old Town on day 1, go high on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain on day 2 (the cable car and Blue Moon Valley are unforgettable), then slow down in Shuhe and Baisha on day 3 — the proven first-timer order.
Budget note: About ¥1,000–1,500 per person for 3 days excluding flights — see the full budget breakdown below. Tickets roughly ¥500, guesthouse ¥150–400/night.
Why Lijiang Is Worth 3 Days
Lijiang is a UNESCO World Heritage site for a reason: an 800-year-old Naxi town of cobbled lanes, willow-lined canals, and stone bridges, watched over by the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山), which rises 15 km north and crowns nearly every view. It is one of the few Chinese old towns where an ethnic minority still lives and works — Naxi elders still write in Dongba, the world's only living pictographic script.
The magic is the contrast: mornings are for snow peaks and glacial lakes, evenings for lantern-lit cobblestones and Naxi music. Three days gives you both sides. Two days forces you to skip the mountain (the highlight); four days lets you add Lugu Lake or the Shangri-La loop (see our full Lijiang guide).

Day 1: Lijiang Old Town, Black Dragon Pool & Mu Palace
Theme: The maze. Tickets: Old Town free; Mu Palace ¥40; Black Dragon Pool free. Time: Full day, gentle pace.
Arrive (from the airport: shuttle ¥20 to the south gate, or DiDi ~¥100), drop your bags — stay inside the Old Town if you can — and start walking. The Old Town (Dayan 大研古城) is 354 bridges and three mountain streams flowing between cobbled lanes. Sifang Street (四方街) is the heart: the daily Naxi bonfire dance starts around 7 PM in summer, free to join.
Mid-morning: walk north to Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭), 15 minutes from the Old Town. On a windless morning before 9 AM, the lake is glass-still and Jade Dragon's snow line reflects perfectly — the classic shot. Free entry; the Dongba Culture Museum is inside.
Afternoon: Mu Palace (木府) — the Naxi rulers' "smaller Forbidden City", ¥40. The palace is built facing Jade Dragon, and the rear terrace has one of the best town-and-mountain views in Lijiang.
Evening: the Old Town transforms — stone lanterns come on, Naxi musicians play on the bridges, and the air smells of grilled yak and plum wine. Climb Lion Hill / Wangu Tower (¥35) for the panoramic shot of the town below Jade Dragon.
Honest tips:
- Old Town maintenance fee (¥50) is sometimes collected at the main gates — enforcement is inconsistent; if charged it covers all scenic spots for a year.
- Stay 2 nights minimum — sunrise (6–8 AM, empty streets) and night (7–10 PM) are the magic hours.
- Dinner: smoked pork rib hot pot (腊排骨) at Xiangshan Market (象山市场) — avoid the touristy main-street versions.
- Rent an oxygen bottle (¥15–20) tonight for tomorrow's mountain.

Day 2: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain & Blue Moon Valley
Theme: The big one — a full day at 4,500 m. Ticket: ~¥260 (entry ¥100 + shuttle ¥20 + Glacier Cable Car ¥140). Time: 7 AM departure, back by early evening.
Book the Glacier Cable Car in advance. Same-day tickets routinely sell out in high season. Book 1–7 days ahead on the official "Lijiang Tourism Group" (丽江旅游集团) WeChat mini-program, or via Klook (English interface).
Take the Glacier Cable Car (大索道) — it climbs from 3,000 m to 4,506 m in 10 minutes, a huge altitude jump. Then walk the elevated boardwalk to the 4,680 m marker: permafrost, prayer flags, and on clear days a view to the Yangtze gorge. Go slowly — this is the altitude-sickness zone. Rent an oxygen bottle (¥15–20 in the Old Town, ¥60 on the mountain) and bring warm layers even in summer.
Afternoon: descend and take the shuttle to Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷) — four glacial lakes that shift between turquoise and jade depending on the light. Included with the park entry; electric cart ¥50 (or walk 30 min). Mid-morning or mid-afternoon light is best for the colour.
Honest tips:
- Altitude: the cable car's 1,500 m vertical jump is real. Take the boardwalk slowly, skip the summit if dizzy — most cases are mild.
- Bring your passport — Lijiang attractions use real-name ticketing and your passport is checked at the cable-car gates.
- No food options at the top — bring snacks and water.
- Bus 101 from the Old Town to the park costs ¥15; carpooling runs ~¥40/person. DiDi one-way ~¥80–100.
- Check Impression Lijiang (张艺谋's outdoor show, ¥180–280) if you want a cultural evening — it plays against the mountain backdrop.

Day 3: Shuhe, Baisha & Naxi Culture
Theme: Slow down. Tickets: Shuhe and Baisha free. Time: Half to full day, relaxed.
Shuhe Old Town (束河古镇), 4 km north, is the quieter, older trading town on the old Tea Horse Road — more locals, fewer souvenir shops, and a big wooden waterwheel at the entrance. Walk the canals, eat at the market, and climb the small hill for Jade Dragon views. Free.
From Shuhe, walk or ride (e-bike ¥30/day) the old Tea Horse Road stretch to Baisha (白沙古镇) — 1.5–2 hours on cobblestones past mulberry fields and mule-hostel ruins. Baisha is the original Naxi capital: the rooftop bookstore, the embroidery institute, and the Dongba glyph murals are the most photographed art in Yunnan. Free.
Back in town for the evening: Naxi Ancient Music (纳西古乐) — elders playing Tang-dynasty court music on flutes and strings, at the Naxi Music Hall on East Street (20:00 nightly, ¥76–108 mini-theatre, ¥120–160 full concert). Or, with extra time, add Lashi Lake (highland wetland, horseback loops ¥100–200) or Yuhu Village (Joseph Rock's old cottage, ¥25–50) — see more options in our Lijiang guide.
Honest tips:
- Shuhe is the better base for repeat visitors who want quiet at night.
- Baisha's cafes face the mountain — a great spot for a slow afternoon.
- Taxi Old Town → Shuhe ~¥15–20, Shuhe → Baisha ~¥10–15.
- If you fly out today, the airport is ~40–50 min from Shuhe — plan 3 hours before departure.

Best Time to Visit
At 2,400 m, Lijiang has real seasons. Autumn (Sep–Nov) is peak: clearest skies, lowest snow line, but avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7). Spring (Mar–May) brings wildflowers and mild 15–22°C days. Summer (Jun–Aug) is a cool escape and the wild-mushroom season. Winter (Dec–Feb) is the bargain season — fewer tourists, ¥200–300 guesthouses.
