Yunnan, China
Lijiang
An ancient Naxi town watched over by snow mountains — where time slows down.
City Soul
Lijiang isn't a place you visit — it's a pace of being you slip into. Eight hundred years of cobbled lanes, snowmelt canals, and Naxi elders who still write in the world's only living pictographic script.
The Old Town of Lijiang (Dayan)
The Mountain Always Watching
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (5,596 m) rises 15 km north of the Old Town and is visible from almost anywhere — the snow line peeks over tiled rooftops, the summit crowns every sunset. Locals orient themselves by it.
Cobblestone & Canal
Three mountain streams wind through town — you can drink from the stone channels, watch trout dart past doorways, and fall asleep to the sound of water.
Old Town at Night
By 7 PM the stone lanterns come on, Naxi musicians play on the bridges, and Sifang Street fills with the bonfire dance (free, daily). The cobbles are slick and the air smells of grilled yak and plum wine.
Naxi Living Culture
Lijiang is one of the few Chinese old towns where an ethnic minority (Naxi) still lives, works, and writes in the old Dongba script — a 1,000-year-old pictographic system UNESCO lists as endangered.
The Ancient Tea Horse Road
For centuries Lijiang was the southern terminus of the caravan route to Tibet. Naxi traders walked mules over snow passes carrying Pu'er tea. The legacy: Shuhe Old Town (4 km north) still feels like a frontier village.
2400 m of Altitude
Lijiang sits higher than Lhasa's suburbs. The first day you walk a little slower. By day two the cobbles feel normal again. The clear sky is the reward.
Quick Answer: Is Lijiang Worth Visiting?
Yes — if you want
UNESCO old town with snow-mountain views; soft adventure (Jade Dragon, Blue Moon Valley); Naxi minority culture; cobbled lanes lit by lanterns.
Days needed
3 days minimum (Old Town + Jade Dragon + Shuhe). 4–5 days to add Lugu Lake or Tiger Leaping Gorge.
Budget (per day, mid-range)
¥350–700 (~US$50–100) covers boutique guesthouse, two Jade Dragon ticket combos, meals, and a taxi day.
Best time
Spring (Mar–May) & autumn (Sep–Nov) — clearest skies, mild weather. Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7) — prices double, every street is packed.
Getting to Lijiang (from Abroad)
Lijiang Sanyi Airport (LJG)

Must-See Attractions
Every one of these is worth your time — work through them over 2–3 days. Each has its own best-for verdict so you can skip what doesn't fit your trip.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (玉龙雪山)
5,596 m — the snow line above a tropical town
Cable car to 4,506 m (Glacier Park, ¥140), then a boardwalk to 4,680 m. Snow year-round on the summit even when Lijiang is 25°C. Park entry ¥100, plus mandatory shuttle bus ¥20.
⭐ Best for: First-time visitors. Plan a full day; altitude sickness is real — rent oxygen (¥20) before going up.

Blue Moon Valley (蓝月谷)
Glacial meltwater lakes in impossible colors
Four lakes in the foothills of Jade Dragon, fed by glacial melt — water shifts between turquoise and jade depending on light. Included with park entry (¥100); electric cart ¥50 (or walk 30 min).
⭐ Best for: Photographers. Visit mid-morning for best color.

Jade Dragon Glacier Park
The summit viewpoint at 4,680 m
Take the Glacier Cable Car (¥140) to 4,506 m, then walk the elevated boardwalk to the 4,680 m marker. Permafrost, prayer flags, and on clear days a view to the Yangtze gorge.
⭐ Best for: Bucket-list moment. Skip if you have altitude sensitivity — the chairlift alone reaches 4,506 m.

Lijiang Old Town (大研古城)
UNESCO World Heritage since 1997 — the maze
800-year-old town of 354 bridges and 3 mountain streams flowing between cobbled lanes. Entry: free (古城维护费 ¥50 sometimes collected at gates). Highlights: Sifang Street central plaza, Mu Palace (¥40), Lion Hill / Wangu Tower (¥35) for panoramic shots of Jade Dragon above the rooftops.
⭐ Best for: Everyone. Stay 2 nights minimum — sunrise (6–8 AM) and night (7–10 PM) are the magic hours.

Shuhe Old Town (束河古镇)
Quieter, less touristy alternative to Dayan
4 km north of Lijiang, this smaller, older trading town has more locals, fewer souvenir shops, and a slower pace. Stay here instead of Dayan if you want quiet; eat at the market; climb the small hill for Jade Dragon views. Free.
⭐ Best for: Sleep here, walk Old Town during the day.

Black Dragon Pool Park (黑龙潭)
The classic snow-mountain-in-water shot
15-minute walk north of the Old Town. On a windless morning before 9 AM, the lake is glass-still and Jade Dragon's snow line reflects perfectly. Free entry — the best time-and-place photography in Lijiang. Combine with the Dongba Culture Museum (free, inside the park).
⭐ Best for: Sunrise photographers.

Baisha Old Town (白沙古镇)
The original Naxi capital — sunflowers in front of the mountain
Even quieter than Shuhe — the original Naxi capital before Dayan existed. Famous for the rooftop bookstore (白沙书局) and the embroidery workshop of one master craftswoman. The mural of Naxi Dongba glyphs at Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute is one of the most photographed art pieces in Yunnan. Free.
⭐ Best for: Slow travelers; an afternoon escape.
Naxi Culture & Crafts

Mu Palace (木府) — the Naxi Kingdom
The ruling chieftain's residence of the Naxi Tusi for 470 years (Yuan through Qing dynasties). A smaller Forbidden City, built on a south-facing hillside to mimic the imperial palace in Beijing — deliberately so. Ticket: ¥40.
The palace sits next to a hill facing Jade Dragon — the layout says "the dragon and the phoenix roost together."

Dongba Script (东巴文) — the living pictographs
Naxi shamans (called dongba) still write ritual texts in a 1,000-year-old pictographic system — one of the few logographic scripts still in use anywhere. About 1,400 symbols remain; UNESCO lists it as critically endangered. The free Dongba Culture Museum inside Black Dragon Pool Park displays wooden tablets and explains the meaning of individual glyphs.
Naxi Ancient Music (纳西古乐)
Old men in the Old Town still play ceremonial music on flutes and bowed strings that sounds more Tibetan than Chinese. The most famous venue is the Xuan Ke Naxi Music Hall (宣科纳西古乐) near the Big Water Wheel — a tiny theatre that has run for 30 years. Tickets ¥76–108, nightly shows.
Silver & Embroidery
Naxi silverwork is its own art form — look for the seven-petal lotus motif. Embroidery studios on Wuyi Street (五一街) sell hand-stitched pieces (¥200+) that you won't find elsewhere. Avoid the "handmade" silver jewelry on the main streets — 90% is factory.
More to See in Lijiang
Beyond the icons — quieter corners and slow escapes worth squeezing in if you have a day to spare.

🐎 Lashi Lake (拉市海)
Highland wetland, 30 min west of the Old Town
A seasonal lake and bird reserve at 2,440 m. Wetland free; horseback loops to the lakeshore are ¥100–200/circle (always agree on price & route first). Winter (Nov–Mar) brings black-necked cranes and bar-headed geese.
⭐ Best for: A relaxed half-day outside town; birders in winter.

🏔️ Yuhu Village (玉湖村)
Stone village under Jade Dragon — Rocky's old cottage
20 minutes north of Shuhe, this cobbled stone hamlet sits in the shadow of the snow line. Botanist Joseph Rock lived here 1922–1949 studying Naxi culture; his restored cottage is the village's main draw (¥25–50, depending on which venue — verify before paying). E-bike from Shuhe ¥30/day.
⭐ Best for: Quiet travelers; a half-day above the crowds.

🚶 Tea Horse Road Hike
Shuhe → Baisha, 1.5–2 hours on cobblestones
The most walkable stretch of the old caravan route to Tibet. Follow flagstones from Shuhe's south gate past mulberry fields and mule-hostel ruins, arriving at Baisha Old Town. Free; wear grippy shoes — the cobbles get slick in rain.
⭐ Best for: Travelers who want to walk, not ride, between old towns.

🎵 Naxi Ancient Music (纳西古乐)
Naxi Music Hall — nightly concert near the Big Water Wheel
For over 30 years a troupe of Naxi elders has performed ceremonial music on flutes and bowed strings descended from Tang-dynasty court music — dubbed a "living fossil" of Chinese music. The Naxi Music Hall (大研纳西古乐会) on East Street runs a nightly 8 PM show; the mini-theatre variant near the Big Water Wheel is ¥76–108, and the full 19:00/20:00 concert runs ¥120–160.
⭐ Best for: An hour of live music after dinner in the Old Town.
Food & Local Crafts
🍖 Must-try dishes
- Smoked pork rib hot pot (腊排骨火锅) — Lijiang's signature, slow-cooked over pine embers
- Naxi grilled fish (纳西烤鱼) — river fish marinated with chili and herbs
- Chicken-pea jelly (鸡豆凉粉) — cold black jelly, mixed with chili and vinegar
- Lijiang baba (丽江粑粑) — Naxi flatbread, sweet or savory
- Wild mushroom hot pot — summer only (Jun–Aug); fresh porcini & matsutake
⚠️ Avoid wild-mushroom hot pot on the Old Town's main street — most are watered-down or worse. Head to Xiangshan Market for the real thing.
🍵 Where to eat & drink
- Xiangshan Market (象山市场) — local lunch spot, ¥15–25
- Zhongyi Market (忠义市场) — old town south gate, the authentic food court
- Shuhe Sifang Ting (束河四方听音广场) — riverside cafes in Shuhe
- Old Town rooftop bars — pricier (¥80+), great night views but touristy
- Xiaojie Naxi Cafe (小街纳西) — locals' pick for Naxi breakfast

Day Trips from Lijiang
🏔️ Tiger Leaping Gorge (虎跳峡)
2–3 hours — world's deepest river gorge
Between Jade Dragon and Haba Snow Mountains, the Jinsha River cuts a 3,900-m-deep canyon. Car/bus from Lijiang: 2 hours. A full hiking trail (22 km, 2 days) is one of the world's great treks; the 1-hour upper-platform view is enough for most visitors. Park entry ¥45.
⭐ Best for: Adventure day, combine with Shangri-La loop.
🌊 Lugu Lake (泸沽湖)
4–5 hours by bus — matriarchal Mosuo culture
A mountain lake on the Yunnan–Sichuan border, home of the Mosuo people (one of China's last matrilineal societies). Bus from Lijiang Old Town: 4–5 hours, ¥95 one-way; ideally overnight. Stay in a Mosuo wooden house on the lakeshore.
⭐ Best for: A 2–3 day side trip; pair with Shangri-La loop.
🌸 Shangri-La (香格里拉)
3 hours by bus — Tibetan culture at altitude
Former Zhongdian, now marketed as Shangri-La. Tibetan monasteries (Songzanlin), Pudacuo National Park (¥100), and the old town rebuilt after a 2014 fire. Higher than Lijiang (3,280 m) — go slow.
⭐ Best for: A 2–3 day circuit (Lijiang → Shangri-La → Tiger Leaping Gorge → Lijiang).
Lijiang Through the Seasons
At 2,400 m elevation, Lijiang has clear seasons. Pick your reason to go:
Spring (Mar–May)
Wildflowers in the hills, mild 15–22°C, occasional rain. Best for trekking and photography; fewer crowds than autumn.
Summer (Jun–Aug)
15–25°C — cool escape from lowland China. Wild mushroom season — the only time to get fresh matsutake in Yunnan.
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
The peak season. Clearest skies, snow line lowest, autumn colors. Avoid Golden Week (Oct 1–7) — prices double and every street is jammed.
Winter (Dec–Feb)
5–15°C, blue skies, snow line low enough to see from the Old Town. Fewer tourists — the bargain season.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need in Lijiang?
3 days is the minimum: Day 1 Old Town + Black Dragon Pool, Day 2 Jade Dragon Snow Mountain + Blue Moon Valley, Day 3 Shuhe Old Town + Mu Palace. Add 2 more days for Lugu Lake or Shangri-La loop.
Is Lijiang suitable for first-time visitors to China?
Yes — the small Old Town is easy to navigate, locals are used to tourists, and the visual contrast (cobbled lanes + snow peaks) is uniquely Chinese. The altitude (2,400 m) takes a day to adjust — rest the first afternoon.
Do I need a visa to visit Lijiang?
Probably not — travelers from 50+ countries (US, UK, EU, Australia, Japan, Korea, Singapore, etc.) can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days. Confirm eligibility in our visa-free guide.
Can I avoid altitude sickness at Jade Dragon?
Yes — the cable car goes from 3,000 m to 4,506 m in 10 minutes, which is a huge jump. Take it slow on the boardwalk, rent an oxygen bottle (¥20 in Old Town), and skip the summit if you feel dizzy. Most cases are mild.
Is the Old Town maintenance fee (古城维护费) still charged?
Sometimes — officially ¥50, but enforcement is inconsistent. Most independent travelers walk through without paying (it's collected at a few main gates). If charged, the fee covers all of Lijiang's scenic spots for a year.
Should I stay in the Old Town or Shuhe?
Most first-timers stay in the Old Town (better restaurants, more atmosphere). Repeat visitors prefer Shuhe (quieter, more locals, cheaper). You can walk between them in an hour.
Is Lijiang worth it for 1 day?
Only as a stopover — you'd miss Jade Dragon (the real highlight). If pressed, take the 6 AM bus from Dali, do Old Town + Black Dragon Pool in the morning, shuttle to Jade Dragon in the afternoon, evening bus back. Worth it but exhausting.
