💡 Pronunciation Tips

Tones matter

Mandarin has 4 tones. The same syllable with different tones means completely different things.

Q sounds like "ch"

Q is pronounced like "ch" in "cheese", not like "k" or "q" in English.

X sounds like "sh"

X is pronounced like "sh" in "she", but with the tongue touching the lower teeth.

ZH, CH, SH

These are retroflex sounds. Curl your tongue back slightly when pronouncing them.
