At Yuanjiajie, a 100-meter sandstone column floats above the treeline, wrapped in mist on damp mornings. The official viewpoint is packed — go at first entry and wait for the clouds.
Half an hour inside the clouds
The Tianmen cable car is the longest high-mountain passenger ropeway on Earth: 7,455 meters with a 1,279-meter vertical climb. On misty days you ride through the cloud layer itself.
The staircase to the sky
Tianmen Cave is a natural arch 131 meters high in the cliff. Between it and the valley floor wait 999 steps — climbers earn the view, everyone else takes the escalator.

Morning — Yuanjiajie: the Avatar viewpoint
Start at the East Gate (Wujiaju) and take the park shuttle to Yuanjiajie. Walk the ring path to "Avatar Hallelujah Mountain", the First Bridge Under Heaven and the Back Garden. Most first-timers agree: this is the postcard image of Zhangjiajie.

Day 2 — Golden Whip Stream hike
Your second day is made for walking: the 7.5 km Golden Whip Stream trail threads the valley floor between the pillars — macaques, clear water, no stairs required. Add the Ten-Mile Gallery's miniature train (¥38) if your legs complain.

The cable car to heaven's gate
Tianmen ("Heaven's Gate") Mountain rises just outside the city — its 1,519 m summit reached by the world's longest high-mountain cable car. The classic combo ticket (¥285 incl. entry + transport) covers the ropeway, the cliff walkways and the Heavenly Ladder of 999 steps up to the natural arch.

Grand Canyon Glass Bridge
430 m long, 6 m wide, suspended 300 m over the canyon floor — the world's highest glass bridge (¥118–128). Cross in the morning for thin crowds, then take the canyon stairs and mini-rail back up.
Yellow Dragon Cave (黄龙洞)
A 15 km cave system inside Wulingyuan — 4 layers of chambers, an underground river you ride by boat, and the 19.2 m "Dragon's Pillar" stalagmite. Cool (18°C) year-round; a perfect rainy-day plan.
Tujia firepots, cliff-fungi & rice noodles
Zhangjiajie's kitchen is Tujia (土家) country: smoky, spicy and mountain-hearted. One iconic hotpot, one cliff-foraged delicacy, and the noodles that fuel every trailhead.
Tujia Sanxiaguo (三下锅)
The city's signature: tripe, pork belly and seasonal cuts braised in a bubbling chilli hotpot (dry or soupy). Born as a soldier's send-off stew 400 years ago, today it's the best meal in town — from ~¥60.
Rock-Ear Stewed Chicken
Rock ear (岩耳) is a wild fungus picked by hand from the park's sandstone cliffs — once tribute to the emperor. Stewed slow with free-range chicken, the golden broth tastes like the mountains themselves.
Cili Rice Noodles & Smoked Pork
Slurp Cili's springy rice noodles — made from local selenium-rich rice — in a pig-bone broth crowned with shredded smoked pork, pickled chilli and sour beans. Order it "重挑" (extra noodles) like a local, or go for the Tujia smoked pork: black-gold bacon cold-cured over pine and orange peel, steamed or stir-fried.

Day 1 — Tianmen Mountain ¥285
Ride the cable car before the crowds, walk the Glass Walkway and Plank Road, descend the 999 steps (or escalator), then the 99-bend road to town for a Sanxiaguo hotpot dinner.
Day 2 — Yuanjiajie + Tianzi Mountain ¥236 pass
East Gate in, shuttle to the Avatar viewpoint, then the Bailong Elevator (¥65) up to Tianzi's summit platforms. Sunset from the South Gate village if you stay overnight.
