Bonus detour — Xianggong Hill at sunrise
For the postcard shot of the river's largest bend, climb Xianggong Hill (~¥60 entry) at dawn. It's a 20-minute stair climb; the layered mist view is worth the 5am alarm. Organize a driver in Yangshuo (~¥150 round trip).

Bamboo rafting, Guilin-style
If you do one activity in the Yangshuo area, make it the Yulong River bamboo raft. This shallow, slow tributary is poled by hand — no motors — through rice paddies and limestone towers. Sections run ¥180–320 per raft (each raft holds two people). The most-photographed stretch is from Yulong Bridge; sunset here is unfairly beautiful.

Ten-Mile Gallery (十里画廊)
9 km of countryside road ringed by signature peaks. Rent an e-bike (~¥50–80) or bicycle and ride at your own pace — it's the classic Yangshuo morning.
Qianli Jiangshan Viewpoint
Perched above the Ten-Mile Gallery, this "Thousand-Li River" overlook shows the karst field in one sweep — great at golden hour when the peaks go navy-blue.
West Street & Binjiang Road
Yan's famous nightlife strip — think lanterns, craft beer and sizzling beer-fish. Binjiang Road along the river is the calm alternative for an evening stroll.
The Dragon's Backbone
Two hours north of Guilin, the Longji terraces stack over 1,100 meters of mountainside in spirals so perfect they look machine-made. They weren't — Zhuang and Yao farmers have hand-built them since the Yuan dynasty. Entry is ¥80, valid for 3 days across all three villages.

City icons, free hills & one glowing cave
Guilin city itself is compact and walkable — most riverside sights are free and connected by a green embankment stroll. The one underground stop worth your time is the illuminated Reed Flute Cave.
Elephant Trunk Hill (象山景区)
The city's signature: a limestone hill shaped like an elephant drinking from the river. Free since 2022 — book a no-cost timeslot, cross the river bridge and snap the classic profile.
Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩)
Guilin's most famous karst cave — a 240 m sequence of rainbow-lit stalactite halls. Touristy, yes, but the "Crystal Palace" chamber is genuinely jaw-dropping. Book online to skip the ticket line.
Sun & Moon Twin Pagodas (日月双塔)
Two illuminated pagodas linked by a lake causeway — the city's prettiest evening sight. The ¥35 tower climb is skippable; the free night stroll around the lake is not.
Jingjiang Princes' City (靖江王府)
The Ming-era palace complex inside the old city wall, crowned by the solitary Solitary Beauty Peak. Entry includes a palace tour and a "Touch the Fortune" character-rubbing souvenir.
East-West Lane (东西巷)
The rebuilt Ming-Qing pedestrian lane beside the city wall — snack stalls, souvenir shops and the restored Xiaoyao Pavilion. It's touristy but atmospheric after dark.
Guihai Qinglan (桂海晴岚)
A newer countryside resort-style park where karst peaks rise straight from manicured lawns and mirror lakes — the local 'secret' spot for that perfect Guilin photo without the crowds.
Noodles, beer-fish & the smell of osmanthus
Guilin food is rugged, sour and warming — born from the kitchens of farmers and boatmen. Two dishes define the city; a handful more make the region unforgettable.
Guilin Rice Noodles (桂林米粉)
The legendary ¥6–12 breakfast: dry noodles tossed with braised pork, pickled beans, peanuts and chilli, then a free splash of broth. Eat at a street counter, not a tourist restaurant.
Beer Fish (啤酒鱼)
Yangshuo's signature: river carp braised in local Guilin beer with tomato and pepper, served sizzling. Try it in a West Street side alley — anywhere charging more than ¥60 a portion is a tourist trap.
