The perfect 3-day Xi'an itinerary covering the Terracotta Army, ancient City Wall, Muslim Quarter, and the best local food — a comprehensive guide for overseas tourists.

Why Visit Xi'an?

Xi'an, the ancient capital of China for over 1,000 years, is home to the legendary Terracotta Warriors and some of China's best-preserved historical sites. As the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, Xi'an offers a unique blend of imperial history, Muslim heritage, and incredible street food. This Xi'an itinerary covers the best things to do in Xi'an over 3 days. For an overview of all our destinations, visit our China destinations page.

Day 1: The Terracotta Warriors & Tang Dynasty Heritage

Morning (8:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Head straight to the Terracotta Army Museum (å…ĩéŠŦäŋ‘), about 1 hour from downtown Xi'an. Book your tickets online in advance to skip the queue. Allow at least 3 hours to explore the three pits — Pit 1 with the famous infantry formation is the most impressive. Hire a guide or use an audio guide for the best experience.

Lunch: Try biangbiang noodles (čŖ¤å¸Ļéĸ) at a local restaurant near the museum — wide hand-pulled noodles with spicy sauce, a Xi'an specialty.

Afternoon (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM): Visit the Shaanxi History Museum (陕čĨŋåŽ†å˛åšį‰Šéφ), one of China's best museums. Entry is free but requires an online reservation. The collection spans over 1 million years of Chinese history, with incredible artifacts from the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang dynasties.

Evening: Explore the Muslim Quarter (å›žæ°‘čĄ—) and its lively food street. Try lamb skewers, persimmon cakes, and pomegranate juice. Visit the Great Mosque, a beautiful fusion of Chinese and Islamic architecture.

Day 2: City Wall, Big Wild Goose Pagoda & Tang Dynasty Show

Morning (8:00 AM – 11:00 AM): Rent a bicycle and ride the Xi'an City Wall (čĨŋ厉城åĸ™). The wall is 14 km in circumference and offers fantastic views of the old and new city. Cycling the full circuit takes about 1.5–2 hours.

Lunch: Head to Dapiyuan (大įšŽé™ĸ) for yangrou paomo (įžŠč‚‰æŗĄéĻ) — lamb soup with crumbled flatbread, a Xi'an icon.

Afternoon (1:00 PM – 4:00 PM): Visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (å¤§é›åĄ”), a 7th-century Buddhist pagoda. Climb to the top for panoramic views. The surrounding Da Ci'en Temple complex is beautiful and peaceful.

Evening: Watch the magnificent Tang Dynasty Music and Dance Show at the Shaanxi Grand Opera House. Pair it with a dumpling banquet dinner for a complete cultural experience.

Day 3: Xi'an City Exploration & Departure

Morning (9:00 AM – 12:00 PM): Explore the Bell Tower and Drum Tower in the city center. The Drum Tower has a fascinating drum museum. Time your visit for the drum performance.

Lunch: Final round of Xi'an street food — try guantang bao (soup dumplings) and liangpi (cold noodles with sesame sauce).

Afternoon: Visit the Small Wild Goose Pagoda and the nearby Xi'an Museum for a quieter, more relaxed experience. The pagoda survived the 1556 earthquake and is a marvel of ancient engineering.

Departure: Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is about 1 hour from the city center. Allow plenty of time for security. The high-speed train to Beijing (4 hours) or Chengdu (3 hours) is also a great option for continuing your China adventure.
