What Is ChinaWander and Who Is It For?
ChinaWander is an AI-powered travel planning tool built specifically for international tourists visiting China. It solves two problems that every foreign traveler faces: planning a well-organized itinerary before your trip, and navigating China's unique digital landscape while you are there.
This guide walks you through the entire process β from your first visit to the trip planner, to using the Travel Companion on the ground in China. By the end, you will know exactly how to get a personalized itinerary and make the most of it during your trip.
Getting Started: The Trip Planner Form
Start by visiting the Trip Planner page. The form collects everything the AI needs to build your itinerary. You do not need an account to explore the form β just fill in what you know and hit generate.
Step 1: Choose Your Cities
The first section asks which Chinese cities you want to visit. Use the search field to add cities from our destination guides. You can add multiple cities for multi-city itineraries. The AI will recommend flight or train connections between them.
Tip: If you are unsure which cities to visit, start with a classic first-timer route: Beijing β Xi'an β Chengdu β Shanghai. This covers the Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors, pandas, and a futuristic skyline in 10-14 days.
Step 2: Pick Your Travel Dates
Enter your start date and how many days you have. The AI adjusts the itinerary density based on your available time. For example, a 3-day trip to Beijing focuses on the essential sights, while a 7-day trip adds day trips and hidden gems.
Pro tip: Check our Chinese Holidays Guide to avoid booking during Golden Week (October 1-7) or Spring Festival if you prefer smaller crowds.
Step 3: Set Your Travel Style
Choose your preferred travel style and pace. Options include:
- Classic Sightseeing β Major landmarks and iconic experiences. Best for first-time visitors.
- Culture & History β Museums, temples, ancient sites, and cultural performances.
- Food & Culinary β Street food tours, cooking classes, and local restaurant recommendations.
- Nature & Outdoors β Hiking, national parks, and scenic landscapes.
- Relaxed / Slow β Fewer attractions per day, more free time to wander and explore at your own pace.
Step 4: Add Special Requests (New!)
The special needs field now suggests you can mention seasonal events, trending activities, or unique experiences you have heard about. For example:
- "I want to watch a Village Super League (ζθΆ ) soccer match in Guizhou"
- "I would like to try a hanfu (traditional clothing) photoshoot in Xi'an"
- "I want to see a dragon boat race during my trip"
The AI will include these in your itinerary, and our system searches for up-to-date event information to make sure the details are accurate.
Step 5: Transportation, Accommodation & More
Select your preferred transportation (high-speed rail, flights, or a mix) and accommodation type (budget, mid-range, or luxury). You can also set arrival time, departure city, and whether you want evening activities. These help the AI fine-tune the daily schedule.
AI Generates Your Itinerary
Once you click "Generate Itinerary", the AI starts working. Here is what happens behind the scenes:
- Weather check β The system checks current weather for each city to recommend appropriate clothing and activities.
- Attraction search β Real-time data from Amap (ι«εΎ·ε°εΎ) pulls attraction details including opening hours, ticket prices, coordinates, and user ratings.
- Hotel recommendations β Hotels are suggested based on location, price range, and traveler reviews, with Trip.com booking links for convenience.
- Day-by-day scheduling β The AI arranges attractions into logical daily groupings based on geographic proximity, opening hours, and your preferred pace.
- Budget breakdown β Estimated costs for flights, hotels, food, attraction tickets, transport, and extras are calculated per person.
Generation takes about 60-90 seconds. You will see progress updates as each step completes.
Reviewing and Customizing Your Itinerary
After generation, you land on the result page where your complete itinerary is laid out day by day. Each day shows:
- Morning, afternoon, and evening activities with time slots
- Restaurant recommendations near each location
- Hotel suggestions with Trip.com affiliate links
- Transportation notes between activities and between cities
- Weather forecast for your travel dates
- Budget estimates per category
You can pin attractions you definitely want to include (the AI will make sure they appear) and exclude ones you have already visited or are not interested in. This refines future drafts.
If the first draft is not perfect, you can regenerate up to 10 times to explore different arrangements.
Pricing and Unlocking Your Plan
Once you are happy with a draft, you pay to finalize it. ChinaWander uses a one-time payment β not a subscription. Your final plan stays accessible for 365 days.
| Trip Duration | Price |
|---|---|
| 1-7 days | $19 |
| 7-14 days | $29 |
| 14+ days | $39 |
Payment is processed securely through Creem, which accepts major credit cards and international payment methods. After payment, the draft is finalized and all AI generation features are locked β but you can still edit the itinerary manually.
Travel Companion: Your Guide on the Ground
Once your itinerary is finalized, the Travel Companion becomes your go-to tool during the trip. Available for a separate one-time fee of $9.99, it provides:
- AI Q&A β Ask questions about your itinerary, local customs, restaurant recommendations, or transportation options. The AI is optimized for China travel and provides context-aware answers.
- Real-time navigation β Get directions between your planned attractions using integrated maps.
- Nearby search β Find restaurants, ATMs, pharmacies, and other amenities near your current location.
- Live weather β Hourly and daily weather updates for your current city. (Requires being inside China + active subscription.)
- Packing list β A pre-built packing checklist tailored to your destinations and season.
- Currency converter β Quick CNY conversions for major currencies.
- Chinese phrasebook β Essential phrases with pinyin pronunciation, organized by scenario (restaurant, taxi, shopping, emergencies).
- eSIM guide β Instructions for setting up an Airalo eSIM so you have internet access the moment you land.
- Emergency contacts β Key phone numbers and addresses saved for quick access.
- Address cards β Hotel and attraction addresses in Chinese to show taxi drivers.
- Budget tracker β Log your daily spending against the plan's budget.
The Companion activates automatically when it detects you are in China (via GPS and IP detection). Outside China, you can preview it with demo data from Beijing.
Getting Internet Access: The First Thing to Do
Before anything else works β maps, translation, ride-hailing, or your ChinaWander Companion β you need internet access. Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Facebook are blocked in China, and most local Wi-Fi requires a Chinese phone number to log in.
The easiest solution: Buy an Airalo China eSIM before you leave. It costs as little as $4 for 1 GB and installs in 5 minutes. The eSIM routes your data outside China, so you can access all your favorite apps without a VPN. For a full guide, read our China eSIM Guide.
Before You Go: Final Checklist
- Download Alipay and WeChat β China is mostly cashless. Link your international card before departure. See our Mobile Payments Guide.
- Install Airalo eSIM β Activate it the day you fly so you have data on arrival.
- Bring a VPN-capable eSIM or VPN app β If you use a local Chinese SIM, you will need a VPN to access blocked sites.
- Pack a power bank β You will use your phone for maps, translation, and payments constantly. A 10,000 mAh power bank is essential.
- Have your passport ready β Train tickets, hotel check-ins, and attraction entries all require your passport number.
- Review your itinerary offline β Download or screenshot your ChinaWander plan before departure as a backup.
